85 years ago, in 1915, an American cartoonist named Johnny Gruelle patented his design for a rag doll.  That wonderful doll was, of course, Raggedy Ann.  Soon Gruelle wrote and illustrated his first book of "Raggedy Ann Stories" all about the magical doll who could get up and have adventures when no "real-for-sure" folks are about.
Johnny endowed his floppy heroine with twinkling show-button eyes and a painted -on smile.  Best of all, he gave her a candy heart with the words "I love you" printed on it.  The original stories and illustrations are still deservedly popular.
